I have always been fascinated by the luminosity that is reflected in both the natural world and in the courage of the human experience. The cycle of light and dark is a theme in every individual’s journey through life. It is also replicated in the cycle of seasons, the changing color and shape of clouds, the interplay of light and shadow in the forest. All these symbolic themes, these sights, become subject matter for my abstract work.
When I paint, I draw upon the Alchemical concept of Spirit in Matter—the life force which illuminates all beings. The connection between heaven and earth, that magical juncture of sky and land, becomes a palette for shifting light and color and non-objective form. In the act of painting, I find that I enter a dimension, where time and the world disappear. As Paul Klee says, “Everything vanishes around me, and works are born as if out of the void. Ripe, graphic fruits fall off. My hand has become the obedient instrument of a remote will.” In this kind of space, a soulful dialogue between the painter and the painting emerges, which honors the ultimate luminosity of the creative act.
